My Top 10 Films That I Missed in 2015!

This year I have lamented not going to the cinema as often as I’d have liked! There are so many films that I failed to catch, but desperately wanted to see (and more than a few that I saw and wished I hadn’t wasted the money!). Here are my Top 10 Films That I Missed At The Cinema in 2015…

10. The Assassin

You can’t really go wrong with a high-profile Chinese martial arts film, can you? I missed out on all of the critical acclaim ‘The Assassin’ received and thus missed it at the cinema. It’s yet to come out on DVD in the U.K. either (as far as I know, and I’m looking on Amazon right now!), so it will be one on the ever-growing list of films to purchase!

9. Bridge Of Spies

You can’t really go wrong with Steven Spielberg, can you? Unless he’s teaming up with Tom Cruise…Not only that, but a Cold War thriller starring Tom Hanks and co-written by Ethan Coen? Count me in! It’s something that I couldn’t convince my fiancée or any of my close friends to come and watch with me. I might travel to the cinema on my own to catch it if it’s still out in a week or so!

8. Fantastic Four

Don’t judge me! Hard to believe, but I was fairly excited about the reboot of Fantastic Four. I ignored all of the negative news stories surrounding the movie. The reboot couldn’t be as awful as the original two films, could it? Josh Trank gave us the brilliant ‘Chronicle,’ so at least the movie was in safe hands. On release, it was critically savaged, and performed extremely poorly at the box office. But there is a part of me that still wants to see it…

7. Steve Jobs

I saw this film as a complement to ‘The Social Network.’ Two films about two people who wildly changed the world around us. Aaron Sorkin wrote the script (as he did for ‘The Social Network), and he rarely writes something that is below excellent. Not only that, but Michael Fassbender played the titular role, and he’s one of the great actors of the last few years. What could go wrong? I’ll have to wait until the DVD is released…

6. Beasts of No Nation

I have Netflix. ‘Beasts of No Nation’ is a Netflix original film. There’s no excuse for me to have missed this film about child soldiers in Africa. The ever brilliant Idris Elba starred among a cast of relative unknowns. We Westerners need to be reminded every so often of the how awful the conditions are in much of Africa. I was hyped for this film, but for some reason never got round to watching it…

5. Macbeth

The trailer for this take on Shakespeare’s play took my breath away. It looked fantastic, eerie, and full of suspense. Fassbender was also the lead actor. Not only that, but ‘Macbeth’ was nominated for a Palme D’Or. Now that’s a massive compliment! However, no one wanted to watch it with me…once again! I’ll have to wait for the DVD…again!

4. Inside Out

Pixar have never topped ‘Wall-E,’ their creative zenith. It’s a masterclass of animation, storytelling and character that they haven’t been able to reach since its release. However, the critical acclaim for ‘Inside Out’ had me chomping at the bit to watch it. For some reason or other, I never caught it at the cinema. It’s standing on the shelf in the form of a Blu-Ray, crying out for me to watch it…

3. The Martian

Prometheus was yet another sign that the great Ridley Scott is a man well past his directorial prime. I never caught Exodus: God and Kings, for the simple reason that I didn’t believe in Ridley Scott. However, the trailers for ‘The Martian’ gave me hope for Ridley Scott. The critical acclaim for the film encouraged that hope. Matt Damon’s cameo in ‘Interstellar’ was one of that film’s particular highlights, so I looked forward to seeing him as the main character. My friends wanted to see it, my fiancée wanted to see it, but we never got round to watching it…

2. Ex Machina

Alex Garland’s directorial debut? The guy who wrote the script for ‘Dredd,’ ’28 Days Later,’ and ‘Sunshine’? A science fiction film about the rise of A.I. (and I’m not talking about the disappointing big budget Marvel take on the subject)? Once again, count me in! It’s one I bought on DVD only yesterday, but have yet to watch it. I saw the trailer late last year, and pencilled it down as a definite one to watch. Someday soon I will watch it…

1. Sicario

Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Prisoners’ stayed with me for a very long time. It was brutal, gritty, and starred great performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman (possibly his best role thus far?). I caught the under-promoted ‘Enemy’ later this year as well, starring Gyllenhaal again as a character and his doppleganger. It was a beautiful, unnerving experience (and a great contrast to Richard Ayoade’s ‘The Double’). I’ve yet to see Incendies, but missing Sicario at the cinema broke my heart! There was nothing but wild critical acclaim for ‘Sicario,’ but I will have to wait to discover whether or not it was warranted…
