Review: Thor: The Dark World (2013) (The Worst MCU Film?)

“We are not gods. We are born. We live. We die”

Is there any point in writing this review? We all agree that Thor: The Dark World is the worst MCU film, don’t we? Come on, it’s either that or The Incredible Hulk (or Avengers: Age of Ultron). Even the most mediocre MCU films offer some form of entertainment. The sequel to Thor fails to provide a modicum of entertainment. This, along with Terminator: Genysis, is proof that Alan Taylor should stick to TV directing (although I have a soft spot for Genisys…don’t judge me!). I adore the first Thor, and this sequel only serves to dampen my love. Along with Iron Man 2, it dampened my enthusiasm for any MCU sequels (until The Winter Soldier came along!).

It seems the script writers didn’t care about the plot. Some planets are aligning, which will cause the Convergence. The Convergence creates portals between planets…or something. Jane Foster awakens something called The Aether, which in turn awakens Malekith, a Dark Elf who was defeated by Odin centuries ago. Malekith wants to use the Aether…to destroy the universe! Or something like that…It’s possibly the most nonsensical plot of any MCU film…and that’s saying something, isn’t it?

According to Eccleston, there was loads of Malekith stuff cut from this film. Would its inclusion improve the film?

I feel at least 90% of the dialogue is the characters attempting to explain what’s going on. The other 10% is ill-judged humour. Sure, a few laughs are raised. But Thor: The Dark World attempts to turn Thor into comedic relief, Yes, as the fish-out-of-water type Thor was a funny character in the original film, but here he’s almost insufferable in his attempts to provoke laughter. There’s enough “comedic” relief in the film already! Why does the main character need to be comedic relief as well? Of course, Thor: Ragnarok would take this further and reduce Thor to a cipher for comedy, but that’s a different story. Here, more often than not, the comedy fails to hit the right note.

“Satisfaction is not in my nature”

Loki is the MCU’s greatest villain. But with villains like Malekith, there’s not a lot of competition, is there?

Apart from the pathetic comedy, there’s not much else to Thor: The Dark World. There’s the nonsensical plot, which becomes more ludicrous as the film continues. There’s the worst villain in the MCU, Malekith, who’s pushed to one side in favour of more time for Loki! Now, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but by the sequel to Thor we’ve had Loki as a villain twice! I know he’s not a villain in this film (at least until the end…), but why not minimise his screen time and allow more time for Christopher Eccleston to shine as Malekith? Instead, Malekith becomes the most generic of generic comic book villains, wanting to destroy the universe for…some reason! It’s a massive waste of Eccleston, and a waste I find hard to forgive.

One thing I will say about Thor: The Dark World is that the final fight between Thor and Malekith is very inventive! The portal nonsense is used to great effect, transporting the two combatants from Earth to other worlds in the Nine Realms. It’s a little different from what we’ve come to expect in comic books films. Yes, there’s still a fair amount of CGI destruction. But it’s entertaining to watch! Overall, the film has some great visuals. But they alone do not make a worthwhile film.

However, it doesn’t make up for the rest of the film. It’s true that some of the MCU films are treading water until the next team-up film, but even whilst treading water most of the films manage to provide (more than) adequate entertainment. Thor: The Dark World rids itself of all of the good work of Thor and reduces the character to pithy “jokes.” Thor should be a Shakespearian-esque tale of intrigue and familial betrayal. The original, guided by the hands of Kenneth Brannagh, nailed the hammer on the head. The sequel doesn’t know what plot it’s telling, let alone how to make that plot compelling.

VERDICT: 3/10. Thor: The Dark World is the worst MCU film. It has strong competition from The Incredible Hulk, but that’s forgettable. Thor: The Dark World is unforgettable bad.

Whoa, that definitely is pretty low! From the 19 MCU films I put this one at 9. The humor was rather forced at times, but I did like the extra visual effects for the fight scenes. Definitely a mixed bag for sure and not one of Marvel’s best attempts.
