55. Big Van Vader vs Crusher Bam Bam Bigelow (NJPW 12/9/1989)

Before they were tye IWGP Tag Team Champions, Big Van Vader and Crusher Bam Bam Bigelow fought each ither in NJPW. This is the first bout between the two, at least on NJPW World. And it’s safe to say you can skip this bout…

I assume Bam Bam was just starting out in Japan (or in wrestling in general?), as he looks nervous and unsure throughout the bout. Sure, he busts out a cartwheel at the start of the match, but that’s the only thinf of note he really does. The onus is on Vader to carry the bout, and it seems he isn’t quite up to the task here.

There’s not much else to say about this match! It ends in a double countout, and the “action” continues as Vader tries to leap over the barricade onto a prone Bam Bam, but comes up short, so has to mini-jump onto Bam Bam. Not terrible, just a sub-par outing. I hope their second bout, this time for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship a year later, is better…
