119. John Cena vs Bray Wyatt (Cage Match, WWE Extreme Rules 2014)

After John Cena’s decisive victory over Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania XXX (click here for my review), you’d presume that their rivalry would have been over. Well…it wasn’t. Wyatt proclaimed that Cena’s victory meant nothing (even though Cena overcame the odds and didn’t turn to the dark side, as Wyatt had hoped). Extreme Rules would be the PPV of their next meeting…and they would battle inside of a steel cage. Would it be any better than their mediocre ‘Mania outing? Absolutely not.

I suppose this had the unenviable task of following the riotous six-man tag match between The Shield and Evolution, one of the best matches of 2014. Anything would pale in comparison to that bout. But Cena and Wyatt failed to even attempt to reach those heights. There was effort here, sure, but no more effort than they’d expend during a TV bout. In fact, I think they cared less about this bout than their one at ‘Mania.

It doesn’t help that at the halfway point this descends into a 3 on 1 handicap match as the other two members of the Wyatt Family continuously interfere and eventually end up inside the cage. Of course, they pose no real threat to ‘Super’ Cena; he easily fights off all three. Bray Wyatt, who started the year as an imposing heel, looks like just anoyher jabroni for Cena to roll over. Without the help of the extended Wyatt Family, he’d have lost the bout within the first ten minutes.

The end, posing as a way for Cena to lose without losing clean, is innovative. It also furthers the feud between the two with genuine curiosity as to what will happen next. However, it doesn’t make up for the dull bout that preceded it. I didn’t remember that they fought at ‘Mania XXX, and I genuinely thought that their following bout was the Last Man Standing bout between them. This Cage match fell out of my mind.

And for good reason. Both bouts are forgettable, but at least Wyatt looked somewhat of a threat in the ‘Mania collision. Here, he just looks like an ordinary competitor hopelessly outmatched against ‘Super’ Cena, in constant need of his allies to fend off defeat. One to miss, I’m afraid.
