HAMMY’S TOP 10…FILMS OF 2017 (RELEASED IN THE UK!)

Well, it’s the end of 2017 today! I’ve seen a fair few films at the cinema this year, but not as many as I’d like. Among the ones I wish I’d seen but missed are Colossal, Valerian, Alien: Covenant (in a way…), The Big Sick, A Ghost Story, A Disaster Artist (although I haven’t yet seen The Room) and It Comes At Night. I’ve been disappointed by some of the major releases this year, such as Dunkirk, all of the MCU movies, Wonder Woman and Stephen King’s IT. However, there were just enough films that met my approval to make a Top 10 List of My Favourite Films from 2017!!! So here it is…

Review: Blade Runner 2049 (2017) (A Sequel Thirty-Odd Years Too Late?)

(SPOILER FREE)

“I hope you don’t mind me taking the liberty”

When we were told that we were getting a belated sequel to Blade Runner, one of the most influential sequels of all time, I reacted with apathy. Why do we need a sequel thirty years after the original was released? Blade Runner might be very well respected as a film, but I couldn’t imagine many people buying tickets to see a sequel to it. And, of course, not many people have bought tickets to see a sequel to Blade Runner. It only making $30 million in its first weekend, compared to its budget of around $150 million. But I’d advise, nay implore, people who love cinema to watch Blade Runner 2049. What could have been worthless cash-in turned out to be one of the films of the year… Continue reading

HAMMY’S TOP 10…BEST SEQUELS

Last week, I wrote a list of My Top 10 Worst sequels (click here to check out my list). To balance it out, I thought I’d do a list of My Top 10 Best Sequels! After watching Kingsman: The Golden Circle, I hoped that I’d never see a sequel again. However, Blade Runner 2049 rekindled my hopes and dreams. Yes, it’s as good as the critics say. It would be on this list, but I need to watch it again to fully critique it (my review will be coming up soon, just need time to digest the film!). There are some sequels that improve on the original in significant ways, and some sequels that are just as good as the original. Of course, these sequels are few and far between, as the majority of sequels are mediocre. However, all of the sequels on this list should be watched by Hollywood big wigs when attempting to produce a sequel. It’s not rocket science, is it? Continue reading

HAMMY’S TOP 10…WORST SEQUELS

Let’s face facts: more often than not, sequels are unnecessary. Why do we need a sequel to Blade Runner, a film released almost thirty years ago? I’m trying not to cave in to the hype (but of course will see it at the cinema!). Why do we need sequels at all? When a film makes lots of money, Hollywood see that as a sign that people want more. So a sequel is rushed into production. They’re typically louder, bigger and longer. A chosen few are some of the best films of all time. Most sequels fall into the mediocre category. But there are those sequels that sully the good name of the original.   Continue reading
