On my Hardy vs Hardy journey, I tried to find their first singles match together. And I think this is it: a Smackdown encounter for the Hardcore Championship between Jeff (the champion_ and Matt Hardy (I could be wrong, of course!). I watched it out of curiosity’s sake. And it’s a typical, short Hardcore championship match, easily forgettable, over in under ten minutes, and spoiled by the 24/7 nature of the Hardcore Championship.

26. Jeff Hardy vs Matt Hardy (I Quit Match, IMPACT Wrestling 26/4/2016)
I didn’t know, but Jeff and Matt Hardy didn’t have just one ‘I Quit’ match. They had another ‘I Quit’ match…but not in the WWE…in IMPACT Wrestling! So, for the first time on ‘A Wrestling Match A Day’, I’m looking at a match from IMPACT Wrestling! This is quoted as the beginning of ‘Broken’ Matt Hardy, the gimmick that revitalised his career (and the gimmick WWE didn’t know how to handle). And this is a much, much better ‘I Quit’ match than their WWE effort. It seems they were given free reign to do pretty much whatever they liked!

I’ve been searching out for more Jeff vs Matt clashes in the wake of my disappointment over their 2009 feud (barring their very good Stretcher match). I found this singles match from Vengeance 2001, a PPV remembered for Chris Jericho defeating both The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin in one night (and becoming the first ever Undisputed Champion!). On the undercard, Jeff and Matt clashed after having a minor falling out. Neither had betrayed the other, so this was a face vs face clash. And, actually, it’s a pretty good wrestling match!

I saw snippets of this match on the video package before the brothers fought in the ‘I Quit.’ ever the completionist, I sought out this bout. Not too excited about it, I put it on just before bedtime and, actually, I was pleasantly surprised. It actually feels like a grudge fight between two enemies. Of course, the advert breaks stymie the action (the same can be said for any TV bout), but that can’t be helped.

This (as far as I can tell) was the final match of the Hardy vs Hardy feud. Instead of ending it on a high note, this is a low note. You think of ‘I Quit’ matches, you think of the ultraviolent Rock/Mankind, Cena/JBL or Foley/Flair matches. Granted, by 2009 WWE had entered the PG Era, so there was no chance of blood or barbed wire. But you can still have other forms of ultraviolence in a PG setting! You just have to be creative…and this match is anything but creative.

You say WrestleMania 25, you think of HBK vs The Undertaker. Of course, you may think of the dull as dishwater bout between Randy Orton and HHH. But after the classic between The Heartbreak Kid and The Deadman, everything on the show paled in comparison. I always forget about this brother against brother clash. It had a lengthy build, but unfortunately it should have been much, much better. Probably why I always forget about it…
