Spoiler Filled Thoughts On Avengers : Infinity War

WARNING: SPOILERS!

Well, the dust has settled, and Avengers: Infinity War has just crossed the $2 billion mark worldwide. So I think it’s safe to have a spoiler-filled reflection on one of the few films I’ve watched twice at the cinema in the past few years (the other one was The Greatest Showman…the second viewing was the singalong version! And I had the time of my life!). I loved Infinity War (click here to read my review!), so it’s time for me to discuss why I loved it in-depth (and also explore a few niggles with the film!). Don’t read on if you haven’t seen Infinity War! Continue reading

Review: Thor: The Dark World (2013) (The Worst MCU Film?)

“We are not gods. We are born. We live. We die”

Is there any point in writing this review? We all agree that Thor: The Dark World is the worst MCU film, don’t we? Come on, it’s either that or The Incredible Hulk (or Avengers: Age of Ultron). Even the most mediocre MCU films offer some form of entertainment. The sequel to Thor fails to provide a modicum of entertainment. This, along with Terminator: Genysis, is proof that Alan Taylor should stick to TV directing (although I have a soft spot for Genisys…don’t judge me!). I adore the first Thor, and this sequel only serves to dampen my love. Along with Iron Man 2, it dampened my enthusiasm for any MCU sequels (until The Winter Soldier came along!). Continue reading

Review: The Incredible Hulk (2008) (There’s Nothing Incredible About This Film!)

“You wouldn’t like me when I’m hungry”

Ten years ago, the MCU got off to a flying start with Iron Man. However, in the same year, possibly the most forgettable MCU film was released: The Incredible Hulk. I tend to forget about it (unintentionally or not!) when coming to re-watch the MCU films. But for my re-watch leading up to Avengers: Infinity War, I decided to include it. What a mistake! The Incredible Hulk is pretty, pretty bad! Continue reading

Review: Black Panther (2018) (Does It Deserve To Be In The Billion Dollar Club?)

(SPOILER FREE)

“You are a good man, with a good heart. And it’s hard for a good man to be a king.”

So, Black Panther has joined the billion dollar club! It’s about time I reviewed it, isn’t it? Yes, I saw it the weekend it came out, but I’ve been otherwise engaged since then. And I wanted to see if time did anything to alter my view of Black Panther. It gave me a chance to step back from the hype surrounding Black Panther. Black Panther is yet another film, like Wonder Woman, upon which criticism is focused on the cultural aspect of the film, rather than the inherent quality of it. Let’s be honest, Wonder Woman hovered between decent and mediocre. Having a superhero film with a black person as the titular hero isn’t anything new, is it? Blade came out twenty years ago! Of course, it’s hard not to focus on the cultural aspect of the film when that’s all that anyone talks about. But my feeling for the film is still what it was after I first watched it. I bloody loved it! Continue reading

My Top 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2018 (In The U.K!)

top 10

Happy New Year everyone! New Year’s Resolutions? What are those? Well, I have a wedding to plan this year…so most of my resolutions revolve around that big event! However, I do want to put a lot more effort into this blog. I am quite lazy, and recently purchased a Wii U/had a NES Mini purchased for me. So my laziness has increased, largely thanks to Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wild! But I will try my utmost to post something everyday on this blog…starting today, the first day of the year! Film Thoughts: Justice League: What Went Wrong?

In my humble opinion, Justice League was the disaster that the DCEU has been waiting to unleash upon us since Man of Steel was released four years ago. It is an awful film with few redeeming features. Even taking into consideration the reshoots and change of director, there’s no excuse for a film this terrible. But what went wrong? Could Justice League have been salvaged along the way? Or was it doomed to be bad? Oh, click here for my full review of Justice League! Continue reading

Review: Thor: Ragnarok (2017) (Thor-Some?)

(SPOILER-FREE)

“I know what you’re thinking: how did this happen?”

Thor: Ragnarok is the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film to get a shedload of critical acclaim. I’ve seen it advertised on Twitter as the “best reviewed Marvel film yet.” Of course, whenever something receives high critical acclaim, my Spider-sense tingles. It’s true, Thor: Ragnarok is enjoyable. You’ll laugh yourself silly. But I felt a little nonplussed when the credits started to roll. The third Thor film has little in common with its predecessors. The tonal shift is jarring, the characters involved are used mainly for laughs, and the story seems to have been written on the fly… Continue reading

Review: Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 (2017) (Another Uninspired MCU Sequel?)

“Showtime, a-holes”

Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2 was released on DVD/Blu-Ray here in the UK today! I did manage to watch it at the cinema, but felt uninspired to write anything about it. Yes, the film was alright…but’s that about it. It contained flashy and entertaining action sequences and a surprisingly emotional ending. Kurt Russell as Ego portrayed one of the best MCU villains out there. But the majority of it felt like an exercise in box-ticking rather than an attempt to improve on the original. Just like the soundtrack, GOTG vol.2 felt like a tired retread of the original. Continue reading

Review: Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) (Time To Celebrate?)

So, Spider-Man has come back home to Marvel. Well, sort of. Sony have gone halves on Spider-Man with Marvel Studios after their first reboot of the franchise flopped. We first saw Tom Holland as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. Now, he’s got his own movie, Marvel Studios style! The critical reaction is fairly positive, with most critics comparing it to a John Hughes movie with glued in action scenes (I’ve even read a review that calls it the best Marvel film in years). I’d rate it as the best Spider-Man since Spider-Man 2, but that’s no hard feat, is it? In fact, I left the cinema disappointed. Continue reading

Review: Ant-Man (2015) (A Big Success?)

ant man

“Don’t let your past determine the future”

It’s a wonder that Ant-Man is on the big screen at all, after its difficult development history and change of directors. But, the Marvel Universe machine is relentless, ploughing through any obstacle that is in its way! Edgar Wright’s name still looms large over the whole thing, and many reviews seem to focus on what the film would have been like if Wright carried on as director. However, the ‘what if,’ while intriguing, does not shed any light on the end product. Ant-Man came to the screen in spite of his departure, and that’s what we’re left with, at the end of the day. And we’re left with a fun, enjoyable film, but a film that shares the flaws common with most films of the Marvel Universe. Continue reading
