Review: Wonder Woman (2017) (The Best Comic Book Film since The Dark Knight?)

“I used to want to save the world…”

I’ve probably mentioned this before, but I’m always weary when a film is either critically acclaimed or critically mauled. I do try to avoid reviews where possible. But in this day and age, it’s almost impossible. The word on the street was that ‘Wonder Woman’ was a great film. One review even called it the best comic book film since ‘The Dark Knight.’ High acclaim indeed. Fortunately, I had no expectations for ‘Wonder Woman’ whatsoever. Of course, I was piqued a little by the almost universal critical acclaim. What I saw was a good film, but certainly not a great one.

“Let’s have some fun”

I’m always suspicious if a film receives exaggerated critical acclaim or an exaggerated critical mauling. In either case, it seems to be a case of critics jumping on the bandwagon in a hurry to praise or bury a film. Of course, the only way to be sure of anything is to see it for yourself. ‘Batman v Superman,’ for example, was not the car crash of a film that it was made out to be. Maybe Rotten Tomatoes is broken and in need of fixing. When the negative reviews of ‘Suicide Squad’ were released, I hoped that Rotten Tomatoes would be wrong. Unfortunately, a broken clock is right twice a day. And ‘Suicide Squad’ was a poor film with very few redeeming features. Continue reading

Reaction: Suicide Squad SDCC Trailer

“The worst of the worst”

Due to a leak, the trailer for the Suicide Squad from the San Diego Comic Con has been officially released. Come on, it’s the Age of Leaks: if it can be leaked, it will be leaked. The same thing happened to the Batman v Superman teaser trailer, if I remember correctly. Suicide Squad is something I’m only familiar with due to Smallville and Pam Grier, so I had a little bit of interest in the concept and the film. The trailer doesn’t reveal too much about the plot, for obvious reasons, but looks like it will offer something different from the barrage of comic book films we will be hit with over the coming years. And for that reason I’m looking forward to it! Here’s the trailer: Continue reading
