A buddy cop comedy relies on the chemistry between the two lead actors. And the chemistry between Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker is phenomenal in the first entry of the ‘Rush Hour’ franchise. As per usual in Jackie Chan films, the plot is neither here nor there, but the comedy hits almost every time. Sometimes it tries a little too hard…but that can be forgiven.

Being a Jackie Chan film, you expect big stunts and fluid, funny fight scenes. There are no big stunts in the vein of ‘Police Story’ or ‘Rumble in the Bronx,’ but the martial arts action is brilliant. Of course, there’s nothing here to match Chan’s Chinese output, but it’s supposed to be a buddy cop comedy. And in that respect, it succeeds. Chan is always funny, and here he’s possibly funnier than Chris Tucker…
